How to Play Toon Tone

A quick guide to mastering the cartoon color guessing game. No downloads, no sign-ups — just pure color perception.

📋 Step-by-Step

1

Pick a Character

Choose from 30 iconic characters across 5 categories: Superheroes, Disney, Anime, Cartoons, and Video Games. Each character has their own unique color palette to guess.

2

Study the Target Color

Each round shows a color swatch from the character's palette. Pay close attention to the color family, intensity, and brightness — you'll need to recreate it from memory!

3

Adjust HSB Sliders

Use three sliders to dial in your guess. Hue picks the color angle (0–360°), Saturation controls vividness (0–100%), and Brightness controls lightness (0–100%). The preview updates in real time.

4

Submit Your Guess

Press the check button to lock in your answer. Toon Tone reveals the target color next to your guess, shows the ΔE distance score, and awards up to 100 points per round.

5

Play 10 Rounds

A full game has 10 rounds. After all rounds, review your results to see which colors you nailed and which ones tricked your eyes. Try to beat your high score!

💡 Pro Tips

Match hue first

The color family has the biggest impact on your score. Get the hue right before fine-tuning saturation and brightness.

Don't over-saturate

Most people guess colors more vivid than they actually are. Character colors are often more muted and balanced than you remember.

Use brightness last

Once you have the right hue and saturation, adjust brightness to match whether the color is light, medium, or dark.

Learn from reveals

After each guess, study the comparison. Noticing patterns in your misses (too warm, too bright, too saturated) will sharpen your color eye over time.

🎯 Scoring System

Each round scores up to 100 points based on how close your color is to the target:

Points = max(0, 100 − 2 × ΔE)
  • • ΔE ≈ 0 (perfect match) → ~100 pts
  • • ΔE = 10 (very close) → 80 pts
  • • ΔE = 25 (noticeable difference) → 50 pts
  • • ΔE = 50+ (way off) → 0 pts
