Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Toon Tone, the cartoon color guessing game.

What is Toon Tone?+
Toon Tone is a free browser-based color guessing game where you match the exact colors of iconic cartoon, anime, superhero, and video game characters. Each round shows a character's color, and you use HSB sliders to recreate it from memory.
How does Toon Tone scoring work?+
Your score is based on ΔE (delta E), which measures the perceptual distance between your guess and the target color in CIELAB color space. Lower ΔE means a closer match. Each round can earn up to 100 points, and a full game consists of 10 rounds for a maximum of 1,000 points.
What does HSB mean?+
HSB stands for Hue, Saturation, and Brightness. Hue is the color angle on the wheel (0–360°). Saturation controls how vivid or muted the color is (0–100%). Brightness controls how light or dark the color appears (0–100%).
Is Toon Tone free?+
Yes, completely free. No sign-up, no downloads, no payment required. Just open the page and start playing.
Does Toon Tone work on mobile?+
Yes! Toon Tone is fully responsive with touch-friendly sliders. It works great on phones and tablets.
How can I get a higher score?+
Start by matching the hue (color family) first — this has the biggest impact on ΔE. Then fine-tune saturation and brightness. Most players overestimate saturation; the original colors are often more balanced than you remember.
What characters are in Toon Tone?+
Toon Tone features 30 iconic characters across 5 categories: Superheroes (Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Hulk, TMNT), Disney (Elsa, Simba, Ariel, Stitch, Woody, Buzz Lightyear), Anime (Pikachu, Goku, Naruto, Luffy, Sailor Moon, Tanjiro), Cartoons (SpongeBob, Scooby-Doo, Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry, Pink Panther, Patrick Star), and Video Games (Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, Link, Kirby, Master Chief).
What is ΔE (delta E)?+
ΔE is a measurement of the perceptual difference between two colors. In CIELAB color space, which is designed to match human vision, ΔE represents the "distance" between colors. A ΔE of 0 means a perfect match, while anything under 3 is considered imperceptible to most people.
